Careful project planning, detailed risk management and strong partnership minimises downtime when the unexpected occurs.

Maersk Supply Service has assisted Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) at Chevron’s Mafumeira Sul project, offshore Angola, since 2015. After initially assisting with anchor-handling operations, the work scope expanded to include servicing four accommodation barges for approximately 1100 crew. The work calls for close cooperation between the parties and a clear understanding of client needs.

In a relatively short time, a strong partnership was developed, not just because of the success of the work performed, but also because of the regular meetings ensuring goals and work procedures are aligned. This has included a detailed tour of the site by Maersk Supply Service crew, hosted by DSME.

Soft-tie repair in adverse conditions

One particular project in 2016 involved renewing a mooring line connecting a Living Quarters Platform (LQP). One of the eight mooring lines, or soft-ties, connecting the LQP with the accommodation barge had parted, which made it impossible to transfer crew between the two vessels. It was critical that the soft-tie was repaired to reduce potential downtime and keep all operations on schedule.

Maersk Supply Service’s work scope involved project planning and risk management, with a great focus on safety in all aspects of operations.

The project involved two T-type vessels: one to disconnect, retrieve, reterminate and resocket the soft-tie, and the other to hold the accommodation barge in position during the operation. The vessels’ capabilities, in particular DP2 and 165-181 tonne Bollard pull, played a major part in the success of the project, which was performed in adverse conditions, including transverse currents of 3.5 knots. The client, DSME, and its client CABGOC were specific in their praise of the vessel’s performance and roles.
