Operation in the North Sea

The Hibernia Platform

In 1995 Maersk Supply Service performed one of the most significant towing and hook-up operations ever done in the North Sea.

The Troll Floating Production unit was to be towed to the Troll field offshore the coast of Norway on behalf of Kværner Concrete Construction/Norsk Hydro.

8 of the largest vessels of the Maersk Supply Service fleet performed the tow as directed by Maersk's own experienced tow master.

The connection of the 16 pre-laid mooring lines which was composed of pile anchors, 152 mm spiral strand wires and 152 mm mooring chain - one of the most heavy mooring systems ever installed - was done by specially designed “connection tables”. The chains and shackles were joined using powered jacks as the weight of the shackles and pins exceed which was possible to man handle although the vessels were specially equipped for such work.

Upon completion of the operation, the fleet returned to Bergen for demobilization and discharge of the massive amounts of mooring handling equipment.
